Beyond words

Angele Toomey Avatar

An interesting phrase “I am beyond words”. It usually means that the person is so incredulous that they are unable to find the words to communicate.

I like the idea that “I am beyond words” is a clarion call to action. Because words become meaningless through repetition…and also when used without action. Especially for privileged white women who carry their feminism like a badge of honor.

To the streets
The pavement is familiar territory:
It was our path to vote, to university.
We have held placards for the members of our sorority.
And now, we march again for justice and pay equity.

A man's place is expansive
A woman's place is expensive:
Pink tax, doing the double shift, harassment, discrimination...
But it's our lack of hard work blocking progression.

Feminism hasn't always been a good friend
To our sisters of colour or working class women.
Blind to privilege, we fought for our issues to end
And now it's time to join the march and fight again.
