Propaganda Machine

Angele Toomey Avatar

So, it looks like I am back to writing poetry on my morning commute to work! That is a surprise after such a long hiatus! This was the second poem I wrote on Thursday, the other was a “look out the window, then write what you see” warm up.

This poem captures a sense of longing for distraction and hope in the face of inevitable circumstances. The imagery is vivid and the repetition effectively emphasises the speaker’s desire for reassurance.

Propaganda Machine
Tell me again
how the story ends,
I need a rollercoaster
today, more than ever.
Distract me with the details.

Tell me again
and let's pretend
that I haven't heard before
how the hero wins by a claw.
Entice me with glorious victory.

Tell me again
about the time back when
everything was possible
even the improbable.
Delude me with false hope.

Tell me again.
Tell me again.
Keep telling me until
I accept the inevitable.
Persuade me to go on.
