Sisters!

Angele Toomey Avatar

This week has been an interesting one for me. Lots of rollercoaster moments at work and at home. The inspiration came for this poem early in the week, at night while I was trying to fall asleep. I caught the first stanza and held it for a day or two, thinking where it would go next.

The rest came today as I had my morning coffee before work. It ends up it’s about sisters!

Through the years
She was my nemesis
a shadow lurking
at the back of the stage,
biding her time
so that she could distract the
spotlight,
just as I was about to
enter from stage right.

She was my witness
the other soul
in the room
breathing that same
air, with its
dense weight
hanging over us
like the sword of fate.

She was my accomplice
during moments
of fantasy when
it seemed like
mischief could no
longer wait,
caught in a thrill
and the lie we'd
fabricate.

She is my solidness,
arms I can
run back to
after all these years
for warmth,
and to validate
the ties that bond
us together in this
sisterstate.
