International Women’s Day

Angele Toomey Avatar

If you’ve been paying attention, you will know I am an unapologetic feminist. I am that sort of radical sort of person who believes that women’s rights are human rights because women are people too!

Today, I am thinking about the strong women I know.

The women who have chosen a path less travelled in pursuit of their own excellence. The women who dared to speak when society strongly suggested they be silent. The women who held up the sky but couldn’t hold a bank account or property in their own name.

So here is my flow of consciousness…

Women's Day
The day when none of us will die
because men didn't possess, gaslight or lie.
The day when all of us will receive equal pay
because unconscious bias holds no sway.
The day when we aren't paying another pink tax
and women with responsibilities get to relax.

Oh yes, that women's day that happens barely once a year
When we don't owe pretty or have to smile, my dear.
The day when, in solidarity we march, shout, and roar
because getting divorced doesn't mean we become poor.
The day when we go to buy power tools, a fishing rod or a car
The salesmen will talk to our faces...oh, I have gone too far.

In the meantime, I guess we'll have to keep fighting
to end the injustices that still need righting,
Overcoming the interference that patriarchy runs
and marching to the beat of our own drums.
So, all power to us
in all our fabulous.

V.C., an Easter Egg.
