Exploring Life’s Fragility: The Dimming

Angele Toomey Avatar

As we navigate life, the clarity of youth often gives way to the haze of experience. The Dimming is a meditation on that quiet erosion — of confidence, of certainty, and of light. It reflects the way the world can feel heavier with time, more fragile, less knowable. And yet, in the stillness, we hold on. To small routines. To quiet resistance. To the belief that enduring — even imperfectly — is enough.

This poem will be in my upcoming collection Weathered, and like many of my works, it invites you to sit with the quiet truths that accumulate over time.

The Dimming
When the world was newer
I saw truth more clearly.
Under a warming sun
I walked confidently.

Then the world became older
Fragile and opaque.
I took smaller steps
Avoided mistakes.

Now the world is bone tired
I see nothing through the fog.
I hold still
Clinging onto my small cog.
